Korean American Day

From now on January 13 will officially be known as Korean American Day in California.

California Assemblywoman Young Kim was responsible for helping pass ACR3, a bill which proposed January 13 as the day to celebrate Korean Americans.

January 13 was chosen for Korean American Day because it is the day the first Korean immigrants came to America. On January 13, 1903, the first Korean immigrants aboard the SS Gaelic docked in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Kim says, “It is my honor to ensure that the State Assembly recognizes Korean American Day, where we can honor the past, celebrate the present, and dream of a better future for all.”

Notable Korean Americans include golfer Michelle Wie, federal judge Herbert Choy, television journalist Juju Chang, and actor John Cho.
