CAAMFest 2016

The Bay Area’s largest annual showcase of Asian and Asian American artists kicked off on March 10. CAAMFest, which runs until March 20, is an 11-day event that presents the stories of Asian and Asian Americans through film, food, and music. With venues throughout San Francisco and Oakland, attendees can experience panels featuring the works of Asian Americans in animated films like the Pixar short “Sanjay’s Super Team” and TV shows like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Many movies and shorts will also be streaming, including Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift and the beloved Bambi.

Asians and Asian Americans have also been making waves in the music industry. Directions in Sound, highlights the contributions of innovative musicians in the underground music scene through film and performances. One of the highly anticipated events within Directions in Sound is the Korean Showcase, which occurred on March 11. The showcase featured live performances by Korean indie and electro-rock artists based in South Korea: Big Phony, HEO, WYM, and Love X Stereo.

We had a chance to sit down with Big Phony himself to learn more about his music and upcoming activities. Big Phony, also known as Bobby Choy, is a seasoned singer-songwriter from New York City who moved to Seoul to pursue his music career. With his unique sound, Big Phony has thrilled the crowd in numerous shows and worked with some of the biggest names in music, including B.A.P and the legendary Andrea Bocelli.
