Eric Nam Excites Listeners’ Hearts With “Can’t Help Myself”

안녕하세요 fellow K-entertainment viewers,

The summer heat has hit and so has the comeback wave. Among the numerous big name groups, there is a gentleman that has captured our hearts through his great manners, easy-going personality, and famous TV-segments. Who is it? Of course, I am talking about Eric Nam.

Eric Nam was famous even before debuting, posting covers of numerous songs on his personal YouTube channel. This caught the eye of a JYP representative in 2011, but Eric wanted to focus on his studies at the time. During that same year, he posted a cover of 2NE1’s Lonely and that was enough for MBC Entertainment to fly him to Korea to audition for a survival competition named The Great Birth II, where he finished in the Top 5. Due to success on the show, Eric debuted under B2M Entertainment as a solo artist in September of 2012. He has gone on to release singles such as “Heaven’s Door”, “I’m Okay”, and “Good for You”. He has been recognized as a prominent Asian-American figure in the K-pop industry and we can’t wait to hear how this single is like!

Eric Nam's Can't Help Myself

Song Review:

The song starts off with a very groovy beat using the electric guitar and then transitions into the drums that transpires throughout the whole song. An interesting aspect of the backing track is the prominent sound of the high hat, which in turn makes the whole song float and feel much lighter. The use of the claps in certain parts of the song also adds to the uniqueness of the backing track. The most intriguing part of the melody is the groovy beat we hear at the beginning of the song and the chorus. The mix of electric guitar and a hint of a trumpet creates a very silly and ear-catching beat, which fits the theme of Eric’s song. Overall, it was a well-produced song and a new sound for Eric that we would like to see more of in the future.

Eric Nam was always famous for his falsetto and very emotional voice, so it was really interesting to see how he would adapt to an upbeat song. Let’s just say, all the points were hit to perfection. The execution was Eric-esque–transitions between the keys were magnificent especially in the chorus, where you get to hear his dynamic range. You can’t also forget Locos rap which fits perfectly with the ambience and pace of the song. This song contained, surprisingly, a lot of English lines which is a very welcoming sight to us international fans. There were some parts where I wished he would have explored his lower keys more, but overall this was a very solid performance and shows how versatile Eric can be!

Song Rating: 8/10

MV Review:

The MV here was very refreshing as we got a peek into what kind of person Eric is like. The color usage in the video was well done as they utilized many different colors while still maintaining the balance. The choreography of the song was very refreshing as Eric got to show his silly side to his fans and also that he has some moves (that body wave and moon walk though right? 👍) Overall a very lively song that fits Eric’s personality very well!

MV Rating: 9/10
