Red Velvet’s highly anticipated subunit, RED VELVET – Irene & Seulgi, recently debuted with their first mini album, Monster. The duo dropped a fiery music video for the title track of their album, “Monster,” which had fans buzzing for days. This subunit provided listeners with an absolutely no-skip debut album, showcasing their sexy, mature, girl crush concept.

This duo came from SM Entertainment’s five-member girl group, Red Velvet, who has been around since 2014. This is the group’s first time forming a subunit and the duo debuted in early July after shocking fans with the announcement and several rounds of teasers. Red Velvet had their last comeback in late December so fans were excited to hear about the new development of a subunit.

Red Velvet – Irene & Seulgi’s debut title track and music video, “Monster,” dropped on July 6th. The video drew a mixture of emotions from viewers with its sexy, charismatic, beautiful, yet also dark and scary facets. Red Velvet is known for their eye-catching dances and that tradition has carried over into this subunit. The dance to Monster is both sexy and alluring while also showing off the girls’ dance skills. The visuals, vocals, and dance combined masterfully to tell a beautifully haunting story, making this the perfect dramatic title track and video to top off the album.

The gold of the Monster album is really in the non-title tracks, as is the case with several K-Pop albums. Most of the songs on the album continue to paint the concept shown in the “Monster” video. The songs were all perfectly crafted for this album, blending really well together and making it an easy listen. The lyrics of each song further convey the femme fatale concept, with the exception of “Uncover,” which is sung by Seulgi alone. It is probably the most notable hidden gem of the album, showing off her beautiful vocals and heartbreaking lyrics. However, it would have been nice to hear a solo track from Irene on here as well.

Overall, the girls worked really well together in this album. Monster seemed to be perfectly crafted to show off each member’s abilities and how amazingly they work as a duo. Irene & Seulgi are truly femme fatales because they are triple threats: vocalists, visuals, and dancers for this album promotion. It was the perfect debut album for Red Velvet’s first subunit.
